Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia patients have amplified body sensations and report mood changes including anxiety and depression. Also sleep disturbances, fatigue, and generalised body pain. Pain may trigger progressive movement limitation, stiffness, and inadequate posture.

A study at the university of Sao Paulo school of medicine, department of neurology in Brazil studied 30 patients diagnosed with fibromyalgia syndrome.

Each patient was given 10 sessions of Rolfing to ascertain the effects on anxiety, depression, and pain.

The conclusion of the study was that the Rolfing had a statistically significant effect on pain intensity, anxiety, and depression.

Pain Intensity. At the beginning of the Rolfing all 30 patients rated their pain intensity as severe or unbearable. Three months after treatment completion 25 patients rated their pain as no pain or mild/moderate pain.

Anxiety levels according to Beck Anxiety Inventory. At the beginning 28 patients had moderate to severe anxiety.Three months after just 4 had moderate/severe anxiety.

Depression levels according to Beck Depression Inventory. At the beginning 23 patients had moderate/severe depression and after 3 months just 2 had moderate depression.

Note. Many people can be incorrectly diagnosed with fibromyalgia who possibly have some systemic problem, including for example Lyme disease, mould infestation or marcons. I have rolfed many people who have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. In the vast majority of cases very successfully. However results can vary, attesting to the fact that different situations are in play in a lot of people.
